  • fabulous French fare

This weekend we had dinner at one of my favourite restaurants in Dubai – Le Classique at the Emirates Golf Club. Okay so this is only my second meal at the restaurant, which may make the declaration that it’s one of my favourites a little hard to believe, but it’s true. When some good friends of ours visited last year I really wanted to take them there, but the club was closed for renovations sadly. Anyway we decided on the spur of the moment we felt like going, and rounded up a few mates to make it a fun evening. No reason, we just felt like it.

The inside of the restaurant hasn’t really changed much as far as I remember. The chairs are new (and very comfortable) and the bar has been modernised, but I was happy to see they have left the rows of Moet bottles lining the entranceway. The decor seems cleaner and a little sleeker, but the views of the golf course remain as spectacular as ever. I was ecstatic to see the menu (and prices), as well as the chef, are unchanged.

  • a shift-free zone

No that’s not a typo. And it’s not a subtle way of not swearing. I really mean a shift-free zone. For those of you that don’t live in Dubai you may wonder what the hell? Well for the uninitiated, shifting = moving (as in house). And happily this year, for the first time in 3 years, we are NOT SHIFTING. Woooohoooo. Yes it is exciting, not least of all because the average daytime temp is about 45 degrees Celsius right now. And that makes moving anything extremely un-fun, well unless it’s moving your body into a nicely chilled swimming pool that is. That’s about the only moving that I could bear to imagine. Also as we have moved 4 times in 3 years, I think we have earned a year off, at least.

  • “Emirates baking” on the west coast

As I mentioned the other day I was lucky enough to have my Mom visit and spend some time with me in Dubai. One of her new favourite discoveries is the herb / spice / flavouring (how does one categorise it?) called Za’atar. Essentially a mixture of sesame seeds, marjoram, thyme and lemon all ground up together it’s a flavour sensation, and delicious with cheese (my favourite combo). Za’atar recipe here if you fancy.

Anyway she took several packets home with her, as well as a lovely cookbook “When Suzanne Cooks” by an Arabian lady Suzanne Husseini. We had a copy that she loved the look of so much that she bought one for herself to take home. One of the recipes she was most eager to try, once home, was for Cheese and Za’atar Flatbreads.

They look delicious don’t you agree. Wish I could have tried one.

I’m sure you have been waiting with bated breath for my report back on my meal at Jamie’s Italian in Festival City. So without further ado, here it is.

  • Dubai food week

Ok, no, it’s not really food week, but it has felt that way just lately. I had started January with big plans of doing a detox, and going off the booze for a month, but that has all fizzled away like snow in the desert, in July. What with friends visiting, and the pending, and much anticipated, third instalment of the Dubai Ladies Wine Club Come Wine and Dine with Me it has seemed a little bit pointless really to start anything in earnest.

So, instead, I have some lovely pics of food to torment you with (*evil laugh*).
