There has been an email doing the rounds in the last few days containing pictures of a Mercedes that has a white gold body, which were apparently taken outside the Mall of the Emirates. These can be seen here. Of course its completely over the top, but somehow that is something I have come to expect living here, and whilst it is rather extreme its probably not that unthinkable that someone does own such a vehicle here. No, my real issue is why would you bother? Not in terms of the cost and effort, but in terms of the fact you could never really practically use that kind of vehicle here.
Now why would I say that. Well I came to the conclusion (again) last night that people here just don’t care about cars, theirs or anyone elses for that matter. I washed my car myself for the first time yesterday evening. No, its not the first time it has had a wash thank you, just the first time I have done it myself. The reason I decided to exert myself was twofold, firstly that the guys in the mall who normally wash it (very cheaply I might add) don’t use a hose so they never dislodge all the mud from underneath, and they don’t clean inside, and secondly I wanted to see how many scratches and dings it had now. Aside from the first run in with a pole, which we won’t discuss again, I now have a total of 5 scratches and 1 dent as follows; a blue scratch on the rear drivers side, a combined scratch and dent on the drivers door (who opens their car door with such force for heaven’s sake), a black and brown paint mark on the inside of the door near the footwell (I blame valet parking), a scratch on the roof (?) and a scratch on the back door. This is of course combined with the various paint chips from stones and the like in front Let us not forget this has all happened in the space of 6 odd months, from regular around-town driving and parking. Granted there has been the odd bit of dirt road stuff in the last few weeks getting to the new office, but that’s it!
So in conclusion I just don’t see the point of having such a fancy vehicle if all you can do is park it in the garage, or drive it around your estate.
Or maybe I’m just jealous. Life must be hard when these are the things you have to stress about. Oh well, have a happy day.
