the F1 coaster

When I saw the picture of “Ferrari World”, taken from above, in the newspaper the other day I was blown away. Okay, granted, it’s an aerial view of a model, but still very impressive.

Ferrari’s theme park, according to Gulf News, will catapult thrill seeking adrenaline junkies at 241km/h, on the fastest (naturally) roller coaster ON EARTH. The 2km ride has been capped at 50 meters high to avoid interference with air traffic (ok wow) and will emulate the sensation of being in a Ferrari F1 car.

The most stunning feature of the indoor park, and the one that caught my eye in the picture, is the “gigantic red roof which is inspired by the classic double-curve side of the Ferrari GT body” and which will span 200,000 square metres. The Ferrari crest will measure 65 by 48.5 meters and sit atop the tentacled roof. It looks rather like some kind of benign sea-creature at first glance.

The park is set to open sometime this year (2010) but I am not exactly sure when. There are videos on Ferrari TV, and more info on the Ferrari website.

(the video is rather band-width hungry so avoid if you are on a slow link)

This is one of the latest pictures, taken in December. It looks amazing.
