meat free monday

There was an interesting article in the National newspaper’s magazine section this weekend, about what various families and people in the UAE, specifically Abu Dhabi I would guess, spend on a week on groceries. It was quite a wake-up call to see that some families spend a lot less than we do on groceries, and there are only 2 of us (plus some rather fussy felines granted). So Stu was of the opinion that we should try and eat less meat in the week, as meat is really quite expensive here, especially if you are a bit fussy like I am and try to buy organic or free-range where you can.

We, well I actually, already implemented “meat free mondays” at the beginning of the year. Not for the cost, or health aspect really, but in an attempt to make a small contribution in reducing our carbon footprint. This is also the one day a week that the chef, ahem Stuart, has the night off and I cook (yes I am very spoilt). I guess this new arrangement might see me spending more time in the kitchen. Sneaky one Stu!

Anyway on tonight’s menu is Ale and Mushroom Puff Pasty Pie with Champ. And champ is mashed potato with spring onions in case you didn’t know (and I didn’t I must admit). The recipe is from the Meat-Free Mondays website actually (as is the cute little picture) and sounds yummy!

I’ll let you know tomorrow if it tastes as good as it sounds.

Have a good day 🙂
