  • choose wisely

There have been a few reports in the paper lately about the state of fish stocks in the waters around the UAE and the bottom line is that some species are in big trouble.

So before you buy or order fish PLEASE take a few minutes to read the list below, and then chose something that is sustainable.

  • it’s Ayoba time

Unless you have had your head in the sand you will be somewhat aware that tomorrow is the opening of the World Cup Soccer in South Africa! It’s the first time the event has been held in Africa, and as you can imagine this has generated immense excitement on the continent and especially in the country. I have been told by friends and family on email and facebook that the “gees” (or spirit) at home is amazing.

Yesterday was Vuvuzela Day and hundreds of people took to the streets in Sandton at midday to celebrate as Bafana Bafana (the “boys”) drove around the area in a bus. I can only imagine how deafening it would have been, as the vuvuzela (vooo-vooo-zeh-lah), or stadium horn, makes A LOT of noise and is always in evidence at soccer matches in SA. If you are attending a game live you may want to take some ear plugs just in case :-).

Here are some pics from yesterday, sent to me by a friend. It looks like a good turnout.

Apparently the word “Ayoba” is an exuberant expression of general delight or approval, rather than a word with a specific meaning; but not having been home during this build-up I cannot be sure.

We will be watching the opening tomorrow at Emirates Golf Club, won’t be quite the same but I am sure it will be fun nevertheless.

    Ke Nako. It’s Time.

  • our ecological footprint

I wanted to share this little film clip from Emirates Wildlife Society with you as it’s something we all tend to forget about living here, but the reality is we all need to start making better choices.

Emirates Wildlife Society – UAE Ecological Footprint -2010: UAE

This stop-motion animation for WWF/EWS took over 150 hours of set building, 300 newspapers, and 200 hours of shooting for 2500 stills. The process took place in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and London and needed over 50 hours of meetings and more than 400 cups of coffee.

  • the real Sand Cat

I picked the name “sandCat” for my blog entirely on a whim, mostly because my nickname is Cat, and I am living in the desert (where there is…uh…sand). To my surprise and delight I read this morning (in the 7days newspaper) about the successful IVF breeding of a Sand Cat kitten by the Al Ain Zoo and some US scientists. The cat is native to the UAE and Arabia but sadly is in danger of extinction.

    Isn’t s(he) lovely.
